Man shot while pumping gas on Philips Highway

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man pumping gas at a Philips Highway BP station on Sunday afternoon was critically injured when someone in an SUV opened fire, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Police said the victim was filling a one-gallon container about 3:45 p.m. when a late-model Ford Expedition pulled up to the same pump.  After words were exchanged, the front passenger in the SUV fires at least two shots, hitting the victim.  The vehicle sped off and the victim ran to the St. Vernon Lodge, about 200 yards away, where he was found by police.

The victim, whose name was not released on Sunday, was taken to UF Health in Jacksonville in life-threatening condition.

The SUV drove north on Philips, then turned onto St. Augustine Road.  Police said the vehicle was missing its front bumper and had a spare tire on the front driver side.
