SPRINGFIELD, Fla. – Marissa Alexander's supporters joined at Three Layers Café in Springfield Monday night to celebrate her recent release from prison on bail.
Alexander was convicted of firing a gun during an argument with her husband Rico Grey and his two stepsons. Alexander said the shot was in self-defense, stating that Gray had abused her.

Alexander was not able to attend Monday's gathering because she is currently on house arrest, but she did write a letter thanking those who have supported her.
"Thank you all for the support and solidarity during the challenging journey," wrote Alexander. "I am grateful for the many prayers and unsolicited for wonderful caring and concerned individuals all over the world. I feel so blessed to be home with my children and my family. To God be the glory for all that he has done. Your kindness and generosity warms my heart and uplifts my spirit. There is a time for everything and I am hopeful that the future will bring us all together in a unity of celebration. My sincere gratitude, Marissa Alexander."
Alexander was sentenced to 20 years in prison after she was convicted on three counts of armed aggravated assault. She is appealing that sentence. A new trial is expected to begin March 31.
