JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Mayor Alvin Brown made three key appointments to the city of Jacksonville team Monday, the mayor's office announced.
Angela Spears has been elevated to the role of special assistant to the mayor for community engagement. In that role, Spears will assist Brown in his efforts to engage citizens throughout Jacksonville on key community priorities.
In July, Spears was appointed as the mayor's deputy director of communications. She previously worked as a television anchor and reporter in Jacksonville and in Waco, Texas. During her journalism career, Spears won Associated Press awards for her reporting. She has also worked as a community liaison for DaVita Dialysis and a public information officer for the Nassau County Sheriff's Office. Spears graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, where she earned a bachelor of journalism degree in 1995.
David DeCamp will serve as communications director. DeCamp graduated from Indiana University in 1996 with a bachelor of arts in journalism and a concentration in public policy. He also served as editor-in-chief of the Indiana Daily Student. From 1996 to 2000, he was a reporter for the Journal Gazette in Fort Wayne, Ind., where he covered politics and local government.
From 2000 to 2006, DeCamp was a reporter at the Florida Times-Union, where he served as a City Hall reporter and covered national, state and local politics. At the Times-Union, he won first place in the 2004 Sunshine State Awards for his coverage of the 2003 Jacksonville mayoral election. Since 2006, DeCamp has been a local and state government and politics reporter with the Tampa Bay Times, formerly known as the St. Petersburg Times. His salary will be $100,000 and he is scheduled to begin work on March 26.
Jim Robinson will serve as the city's director of public works. He has more than three decades of experience in engineering and management that trace back to his service to the nation as a captain and traffic engineer for the U.S. Army in the mid-1970s. As the city's public works director, he'll earn an annual salary of $147,000.
