Meeting to address traffic safety concerns

Johns Creek residents seek solutions

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – Northern St. Johns County drivers battle traffic woes every day, but it's not just the drivers. It's also the people who live in nearby neighborhoods who are bothered by the current traffic conditions.

That's why the St. Johns County Traffic and Transportation Department will host a public meeting Thursday night to talk about the concerns for Johns Creek Parkway, off County Road 210.

The meeting will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Johns Creek Community Center.

"I just hope it doesn't take a little kid to get hurt," four-year community resident Todd Claus said. "They are always playing outside. It would stink to see somebody get hurt."

Todd and his wife, Elizabeth Claus, said they are annoyed with people speeding and high traffic volumes, and are concerned about safety for the children in the neighborhood. That's why they'll be at the meeting.

"I read they had talked about putting some speed bumps," Elizabeth Claus said. "As much as I don't like that, I think it's actually a good idea because they have to slow down somehow."

At Thursday's meeting, Traffic and Transportation Department staff will discuss details of the Traffic Calming Program and process, and suggested solutions from the comments received at the first public meeting in September will be formally presented.

"We want to make sure that our residents are always taken care of and that they are our first priority, regardless of the situation," said county spokeswoman Jessica Hamburg.

She said residents will have the opportunity to solidify solutions regarding the issues along Johns Creek Parkway.

"Some of those options could be anything from stop signs to raised intersections, maybe speed humps or things like that," Hamburg said.
