Veterans could get holiday tax break

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Sales taxes on certain clothes and footwear would be scrapped for honorably discharged military veterans on Veterans Day, under a measure filed Friday by Sen. Bill Montford, D-Tallahassee.

The proposal (SB 1202), which would provide a sales-tax exemption on clothing valued at $60 or less, is similar to a House measure (HB 263) by Rep. Mel Ponder, R-Destin.

State economists estimated last month that Ponder's proposal would cut state and local revenue by $1.7 million.

Ponder's proposal received unanimous support Feb. 15 from the House Local, Federal & Veterans Affairs Subcommittee.

Both proposals would require people seeking the discount to provide proof of their military status.

The bills are separate from a broader Veterans Day tax break sought by Gov. Rick Scott in his recommended $83.5 billion budget.

Scott proposed an exemption that would cover a three-day period around Veterans Day and would apply to anyone who buys clothing and footwear priced at $100 or less, school supplies at $15 or less and other specified items.

The governor's office estimated the savings to shoppers at $18.4 million.
