Police: Woman made up story about being kidnapped

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Shannon Nicole Campbell, 20, was arrested Monday morning for making up a story about being kidnapped and held for ransom, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

At 2:40 p.m. Sunday police were called to 5663 Greenland Road in reference to a missing person. When officers got there, family members of Shannon Campbell had been gone for a week, but said they had started receiving text messages from her that concerned them.

Police said the text messages stated the Campbell was being held against her will by an unnamed individual because she owed money for drugs. The Campbell told the family member to transfer $2,000 via Western Union to secure her release.

According to police, Campbell advised via texts that if the money was not sent, the she would be killed.

While conducting the investigation, family members continued to receive repeated texts from Campbell.

Some examples of the text messages were, "She could not leave, that 'he' would put a needle in her arm with 'molly' or heroin and make her life worse." In another text message, she stated, "I can't leave, save me," "I can't go anywhere until I have something to offer."

Homicide detectives were called to the scene and began an investigation. 

Police located Campbell about 12:30 a.m. Monday on Abby Lane. Campbell was located in good health with no apparent injuries.

Campbell was transported to the police station for an interview. During the interview, police said, she admitted to lying about being kidnapped and held against her will. She stated she made the story up so she could get money from her mother and admitted that at no time was a crime being committed against her and she knew what she was doing was wrong, according to police.

The suspect was arrested for filing a false police report and was transported to jail.
