Mom of toddler's killer gets 10 years for role in murder
Karimah Elkins convicted of aiding son after killing of Brunswick baby
The mother of a the teenager convicted of murdering a 13-month-old Brunswick boy was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in prison for her role in the case.
Karimah Elkins was convicted of providing a false alibi, evidence tampering for getting rid of the gun, and possession of a firearm by convicted felon. She has 30 days to appeal the sentence.
Her son, DeMarquise Elkins, was sentenced to life for shooting and killing Antonio Santiago while his mom was pushing him in a stroller in March 2013. The boy's mother, Sherry West, was also shot.
"I feel content about the decision," West said of Karimah Elkins' sentencing. "I feel that she had plenty of chances to correct her mistakes and she just didn't want to."
Karimah's arrest came after she and her sister Katrina made inconsistent statements to police, according to investigators. Her son is spending the rest of his life in prison and she will see some time behind bars as well.
Police said Karimah and her sister Katrina were not honest with them, and that's why they were arrested.
Prosecutors said evidence from Elkins' mother led investigators to a pond where they found a revolver.
“They made statements that were inconsistent with previous statements, with future statements, inconsistent with evidence,” said Glynn County Police Chief Matt Doering.
Dominque Lang (pictured above), the other teen charged in the killing, had a pretrial hearing Tuesday.
Judge Stephen Kelley is allowing Lang's maturity, personality and mental ability to be examined to see if the case should be moved to juvenile court. Lang was 14 years old at the time of the shooting.
"He was there and he was as big of a threat to me and my baby as the shooter," West said. "And he had time also walking down that long road of Ellis Street to decide to run, and he did not want to run away and call the police while that boy was shooting me two times before he shot my baby."
