The insurance institute -- financed by auto insurers -- puts vehicles through various crash tests to measure how well they protect occupants.

The crash test results are measured on a four-step scale: poor, marginal, acceptable and good.

Asian brands dominated the list. Toyota had the most vehicles -- 12 in all -- winning a top safety pick award.

Honda had the second most award winners with a total of 10.
