JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The cty of Jacksonville Solid Waste Division is hosting a household hazardous waste and electronic waste mobile collection event on Saturday. The collection event takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the parking lot of the Jacksonville Beach Public Works Department at 1460 Shelter Avenue in Jacksonville Beach.
Missed Channel 4's Shredder Day? There will be free paper shredding provided by Ultra Shred at the event from 9 a.m. to noon.
Saturday's collection is one of six scheduled events held throughout Jacksonville to help with the proper disposal of household hazardous waste and recycling of electronic waste that would otherwise be disposed of in the landfill. Duval County residents are encouraged to bring their household hazardous waste and e-waste to one of six scheduled mobile collection events, held November through May, or to the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility located at 2675 Commonwealth Ave. The HHW Facility is open Tuesday through Saturday, 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Examples of e-waste include: televisions (limit three per customer), computer monitors and terminals, keyboards, printers, scanners, stereo equipment, VCRs, camcorders, DVDs, radios, desk or mobile phones, pagers, power tools, small kitchen and health and beauty appliances, etc.
E-waste is collected as part of the normal garbage collection service if left at the curb. However, once these items enter the waste stream with normal garbage they cannot be recycled and are disposed of in the landfill.
Examples of household hazardous waste include: paint, varnish, shellac, paint thinners and strippers, rechargeable, car or lead acid batteries, thermometers, thermostats, drain cleaners, pool chemicals, antifreeze, aerosol cans, fertilizer, pesticides, acids, gun powder, ammunition, fireworks, fluorescent bulbs and tubes, oil and oil filters, gasoline, etc.
Household hazardous waste cannot be collected curbside with regular trash.
