"If you're experiencing back pain or knee pain, the elliptical would not be a good cardio exercise to do,” exercise physiologist Elizabeth Outlaw said.

Outlaw suggested swimming or biking as an alternative form of cardio.

Professionals said the chest fly machine places a lot of tension on the shoulder joint and can cause hyperextension. They recommend adjusting the machine so your elbows are slightly in front of your body.

"As you sit down, think about sticking your glutes out and back," Outlaw said.

When squatting, people are cautioned to watch out for a rounded back, the most common lumbar spine injury, which can cause herniated discs.

Professionals suggest focusing on keeping a neutral, or slightly arched, back and contracting the abdominal muscles.

The knee extension machine can cause knee pain from hyperextending. People using the machine should try to avoid extending too far and using too much weight.

Professionals also warn about the bench press and an arched back. It can force a person’s back into an improper lumber hyper-extension.

People are encouraged to check with a professional to make sure their form is correct and to help avoid injury.
