Mother killed; daughter searches for answers

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jazmin Cook was just 2-years-old when her mother was killed in front of her and her little sister. Fourteen years later, she is still waiting for answers in her mother's death.

Vickie Cook,19, was stabbed to in her West 27th Street home back in 2001. There have still been no arrests in the case.

On Tuesday, the anti-crime group known as MAD DADS will walk the neighborhood in hopes of shedding new light on the case.

"We haven't had justice for her and that's what we want. But we haven't gotten it. It's just hard. It's like being pushed away," said Jazmin Cook.

According to police, the attacker stabbed Vickie in front of Jazmin (pictured below) and Alexis Cook, plus several other children in her care.

As they grew up, both Jazmin and Alexis Cook came to understand what happened to their mom. Both girls now go to school in Grand Park and say one of the hardest things is seeing their friends interact with their mothers, knowing they will never get to do the same.

"It's hard seeing everybody with their moms and being able to talk to a mother figure. And to have someone in their life like that," said Jazmin Cook.

Those who remember Vickie Cook say she was a funny, smart and dedicated mother.

Just after Vickie Cook's attack, police said they were looking for two men. The first was a black man about 5 feet 11 inches tall weighing 200 pounds and wearing his hair in dreadlocks or cornrows. The second man did not enter the house but was seen driving away in a stolen Ford Astro van with a temporary tag in the right rear window.

Police are still looking for information in this case. Call the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office at 904-630-0500 or call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.

At 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, MAD DADS will walk the neighborhood on West 27th Street trying to find anyone in the area that may have information that could help solve this cold case homicide.
