Multi-county pursuit ends in Sumter County

Numerous charges have been, or will be, filed in multiple counties

SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. – A multi-county pursuit ended in Sumter County Wednesday. The chase started a little after 9 a.m., when Florida Highway Troopers attempted to stop a vehicle for reckless driving in Columbia County on interstate 75, according to a release from the FHP. 

According to the news release, the vehicle had previously fled from Suwannee County Deputies. The vehicle was pursued into Marion County. During the pursuit, the release states that the driver attempted to strike FHP Troopers. The Marion County Sheriff's Office provided air support, and the pursuing units were able to back off. The suspect continued to flee and eventually drove his vehicle to a residence in Sumter County, the release said.

The suspect then allegedly attempted to steal a resident's vehicle, but could not. The suspect is said to have then fled on foot. According to the release, members of FHP, Sumter County Sheriff's Office and Marion County Sheriff's Office responded and set up a perimeter. A K-9 was used to track the suspect, and he was captured a short time later. During the investigation, it was determined that the 2015 Chevy Silverado the suspect was driving had been stolen from a dealership in Clermont. 

A wallet and purse were also discovered during the investigation. The suspect was accused of having broken out a window of a vehicle in Jacksonville and stolen the victim's purse and wallet. The suspect was treated for a dog bite, then transferred to Sumter County Jail, according to the release. 

According to the release, numerous charges have been, or will be filed against the suspect in multiple counties by various law enforcement agencies. The charges include reckless driving, fleeing and eluding, aggravated assault on a LEO, grand theft, petit theft, and burglary.
