An 11-year-old boy is out of the hospital two weeks after a 5-foot-long eastern diamondback rattlesnake bit his leg.
Ben Smith left UF Health Gainesville on Saturday and is recovering at home.
He was running through the woods while attending a friend's birthday party in Newberry when the snake bit him on May 30. The Gainesville Sun reports Smith received 80 vials of antivenin during his 15-day hospital stay.
The boy walked out of the hospital, carrying a Gators football helmet signed by doctors and nurses. His mother, Heather Smith, says she's thankful for the care he received.
Doctors say he shouldn't have any long-term issues. But he'll need some physical therapy for his leg.
