"It's horrible. It's a terrible thing. The family is devastated, they need our prayers," said Idaho State Police Sgt. John Burke.

The Idaho Statesman newspaper reports two other children and the bus driver have been treated and released from a local hospital.

The newspaper also quotes hospital officials as saying the two other injured children were "alert and awake" before they were taken to a children's hospital.

The bus was carrying 12 students to an elementary school in the small town of Kuna, Idaho, when it collided with a dump truck at an intersection.

All the children were sixth-graders or younger.

Police said they haven't determined yet which driver may have been at fault.
