New law will shield military housing from taxes

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Gov. Rick Scott on Thursday signed a bill (HB 361) that will make clear property taxes cannot be collected on military-base housing.

Lawmakers passed the bill, sponsored by Rep. Jay Trumbull, R-Panama City, and Rep. Jimmie Smith, R-Inverness, after legal disputes in some parts of the state about whether property taxes should be levied.

Those disputes have focused, at least in part, on privately operated rental housing on military bases.

The bill takes effect July 1 but also applies retroactively to Jan. 1, 2007. Such retroactivity could affect ongoing disputes about the issue.Â
