Police: 1-year-old nearly drowns in bathtub

Jacksonville Sheriff's Office investigates near drowning on West Beaver Street

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 1-year-old was found unconscious in a bathtub Thursday night at a home on West Beaver Street, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

The child was taken to UF Health in critical condition. Police did not say if the baby is a boy or girl.

Lt. Michael Shell said police and firefighters responded to the home in the New Town area around 6 p.m. Thursday after someone called 911.

"We have investigators that are working to determine the circumstances behind that child being find in the bath tub and are following up," Shell said.

He said police are interviewing family members and neighbors to try to figure out if the child's parents were home at the time.

Shell said the child's mother was at the hospital with the child and was cooperating with police.

The Department of Children and Families has been notified, police said.
