News4Jax partners with Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Nearly one in eight women in the United States develops breast cancer. That's a startling statistic, but if detected early, the survival rate is higher than 90 percent.

That's why News4Jax is partnering with Komen North Florida Race for the Cure.

In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness month, News4Jax held a phone bank Thursday to collect donations and encourage people to sign up for the 5K Race for the Cure.

Former Jaguars quarterback David Garrard is an honorary co-chair for Race for the Cure.

"Everybody knows somebody that knows somebody that was affected by breast cancer, and we want to eliminate that," Garrard said. "Nobody wants to lose their mothers to a terrible disease, or their sisters or their aunts. There (are) even men that are affected by it, too. That just encompasses everybody now, so we should definitely be out there raising money, raising awareness, so we can eliminate it."

The Race for the Cure 5K run and walk is Saturday, Oct. 18, at 8 a.m. at Metropolitan Park. The race begins at 9 a.m. There's also a 2K race that starts at 10 a.m.
