NWS says EF0 tornado spawned Saturday's damage

Barn destroyed, mobile home damaged in St. Johns County

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – A barn was destroyed and a mobile home damaged in Eklton Saturday night when a supercell passed through Northeast Florida, dropping heavy rain across parts of three counties and producing hail and a lightning show in St. Johns County.

A National Weather Service survey team visited the heaviest damaged are on Monday and confirmed that an EF0 tornado touched down near State Road 207 and Meadow Brook Road on Saturday night.

Meteorologist estimate the tornado contained winds of 60 to 80 mph.

"Radar does not tell us what the intensity of a tornado is, so when you hear a tornado warning, you can't always assume its going to be a weak tornado and so you have to take protective action regardless," NWS meteorologist Pete Wolf said.

People were out Monday cleaning up from the storm.

"The downbursts were just unbelievable," said Leighton Middleton, whose barn was destroyed by the twister.

He said hail and a deluge of rain caused even more damage.

"Three inches of rain in 30 minutes, devastating for our crops, devastating for the community as a whole," Middleton said.

Those in Elkton were just thankful no one was injured in the storm.

"That's the good thing," Middleton said. "Its a wonder somebody didn't get hurt."
