Oak branch damages yard, koi pond in Spring Park

No one home or injured when blustery weather brings down large branch

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A large branch from an oak tree fell just feet from a home in the Spring Park area during blustery weather on Monday.

The home is on Gibson Road, which is right off Beach Boulevard west of the Emerson Expressway.

No one was home and no one was injured, but the branch badly damaged the yard and fell on the family's koi pond.

The couple said four generations of koi live in the pond, and they're trying to save the fish after the branch damaged the pumps for the filtration system.

The homeowner, Tom Hornoi-Centerwall, said his wife came home around 1 p.m., saw the branch in the yard and called him.

"She knew that there was a chance of something happening. We talked about trees falling," he said. "She said, 'This is really bad.' And I thought, 'How bad can it be?' And when I came out I though, 'Yep, it's pretty bad."

Pieces of the branch also caused some small damage to the roof of the home.

"I never expected to see anything like this," Hornoi-Centerwall said. "It was worse than I thought it was going to be."

The family has contacted its insurance company and is beginning clean-up as soon as possible.
