According to FHP, Wilson was driving south on Busch Drive near Malnove Road about 7:30 p.m. as the driver of the big rig, identified by FHP as 50-year-old Timothy Thomas, was headed north.

FHP said Wilson's Ford Exhibition crossed the center line into the northbound lane and struck the tractor-trailer head on.

Thomas was not injured in the incident.

Sheriff John H. Rutherford confirmed the death of Wilson (pictured, right) in a statement issued late Friday night:

"Officer Tchenter Wilson, a 15-year veteran of our agency, was killed tonight in a crash, while off-duty in his personal vehicle," said Rutherford. "Anytime we lose one of our JSO family, it is difficult. Our prayers are with the Wilson family, and we stand ready to assist them and his many friends in any way we can."

Troopers said they would be investigating Wilson's speed and looking at dashcam video provided by a Federal Express driver that appeared to show him having to leave to road to avoid Wilson' SUV heading south in the northbound lane just prior to the fatal crash.

All lanes of Busch Drive at Whittaker Road were closed for hours as the Florida Highway Patrol investigated the crash.
