JSO: Man fatally shot father on Westside

Man at hospital tells doctors, then police that he killed his father

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 55-year-old man was found shot to death earlier this month in his Westside home after the victim's son, who was trying to check himself into a hospital, told doctors that he shot his father, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

Zachery Nathaniel Allen, 24, was arrested July 8 on a charge of murder.

Police were called to Baptist Health at 9:50 p.m. July 3 to talk to Allen, who was attempting to get help for previously diagnosed mental health issues. After talking with Allen, officers went to a home on McGirts Creek Drive, where they found Allen's father, Carlton Allen, dead of gunshot wounds.

Allen was taken into custody at the hospital. Because of medical privacy laws, police cannot release details of his mental health history.
