Officials repair I-95 at fiery crash site

6 killed Saturday in crashes on interstate

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Repairs began Wednesday night on the section of Interstate 95 in southern St. Johns County that was damaged by a fiery fatal crash.

Two southbound lanes were closed between 7 p.m. Wednesday to 5 a.m. Thursday.

The location is mile marker 301, three miles north of U.S. 1 (Exit 298), north of the St. Johns-Flagler county line. The pavement was damaged late Saturday when a tractor-trailer slammed into traffic backed up from a separate crash, resulting in a pileup that killed three adults and a 1-year-old boy and started a fire that burned well into the night.

The estimated cost of repairs is $25,000, according to the Florida Department of Transportation. P&S Paving of Daytona Beach is replacing a 300-foot section of pavement in the center and outside lanes as well as the emergency lane.

FDOT conducted tests Monday to determine the extent of damage and found it went into the lower layer of pavement. So three inches of asphalt in both the structural and friction layers will be removed and replaced.

Officials said the repairs are expected to be completed in one night.
