1891: Erwin Rommel, who would go become a highly decorated German officer in World War I and a German Field Marshal of World War II, is born in Heidenheim in the Kingdom of W├╝rttemberg (then part of the German Empire). Rommel's leadership of German and Italian forces in World War II's North African campaign earned him the nickname Desert Fox. He would also later commanded the German forces opposing the Allied cross-channel invasion in Normandy.
