1869: Political and spiritual leader Mohandas K. Gandhi is born in Porbandar, India. He would become known for his advocacy of non-violent resistance to fight tyranny. He was shot and killed at age 78 on Jan. 30, 1948, by a Hindu extremist who thought he was too sympathetic to India's Muslims.
