JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

One person is dead and one other is in the hospital after an armed robbery, an attempted armed robbery, and a traffic crash at multiple scenes near Wesconnett Blvd.

Police were called to the post office near Wesconnett Boulevard and 103rd Street after a man was found unresponsive in the parking lot.

According to Sgt T.K. Waters, one man was robbed while sitting at a bus stop near the post office by two men. The victim complied with the men and was not injured.

Police said the two men then attempted to rob another man -- 58-year-old Dan Ellis -- in the post office parking lot. He did not comply and was then hit by the robbers' car. Ellis was transported to Orange Park Medical Center in serious condition.

Waters said the two men then fled in the vehicle toward La Moya Avenue, which is not far from the post office. While fleeing, they hit and killed a bicyclist on La Moya Avenue.

Police say 56-year-old John Sikes was riding his bicycle eastbound on La Moya Avenue in the bicycle lane. A vehicle that was occupied by two men was driving eastbound on La Moya Avenue at a high speed.

The roadway curved to the left and the vehicle failed to negotiate the curve, striking the victim and his bicycle. According to police, the vehicle fled the scene and was later located abandoned near La Moya Avenue and Confederate Point Road.

"We do have one subject in custody and we have several witnesses, so we're still trying to gather everything together," Waters said.

Crime expert Ken Jefferson said the watchful eyes of the public are key in this case.

"Whatever information the Sheriff's Office can put out, as far as a description of this individual or a description of a vehicle they may be driving, is virtually important to the public," Jefferson said.
