Parents charged in 4-year-old's death

Records show man teaches at Andrew Jackson High School

JACKSONVILLE,Fla. – News4Jax has learned more about two parents arrested in connection with the death of their 4-year-old daughter.

Jail records show John Ross Norfleet and Shavonn Chanyell Norfleet were booked into the jail Saturday afternoon charged with aggravated child abuse, and aggravated battery on a child/using a deadly weapon.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says paramedics arrived at the Fountains at Deerwood apartment complex late Friday night. Police said the child's parents were questioned.

Public records show the Norfleet's home address as the apartment complex. John Norfleet's Linkedin page says he is a teacher at Andrew Jackson High School. A search on the school's website shows a teacher by the same name with a bio. That bio mentions his wife Shavonn and his three daughters. .John Ross Norfleet Andrew Jackson bio.JPG

Police say first responders realized there was more to the medical call and informed law enforcement. The girl was taken to Wolfson Children's Hospital where she died. Police say it appeared the child had physical abuse signs. Neighbors are shocked something like this happened in the usually quiet complex.

"The parents usually stay with their children to wait for them to get on the bus safely. A lot of them we see walking from down there on their own. We say good morning to them as they walk by," said Patricia Butorac, neighbor.

The Department of Children and Families tells News4Jax they had no prior involvement with the Norfleets and the two other children are in protective custody.

A spokeswoman with the Duval County School Board says it will not be able to give information about Norfleet until Monday at the earliest.

Both John Norfleet and Shavonn Norfleet are due back in Court Feb. 23rd.
