A mother and father were sentenced this week for their involvement in the abuse of their 3-month-old girl.
Kayla Marie Wilson, 25, was sentenced to 30 years in prison on a count of aggravated child abuse. She also received 15 years on one count of child neglect. The sentences run concurrently.
Her husband, Joshua Llewellyn Wilson, 30, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on one count of child neglect.
In February 2012, Kayla Wilson told authorities she found her baby unresponsive. The child was taken to the hospital, where doctors found no pulse and extremely low glucose levels. The medical staff managed to revive and stabilize the victim.
After extensive medical testing, doctors found that the child suffered from severe brain damage, a skull fracture, dehydration, seizures and bed sores. They also ruled that the child had not been fed for several days and was severely malnourished. Doctors also found dirt and blood under the baby’s unkempt fingernails.
The child weighed six pounds at birth. When the three-month-old arrived at the hospital, she weighed only five pounds. Law enforcement also discovered the child was kept hidden away in a bassinette in a closet.
Due to the abuse, the now 18-month-old victim is in a vegetative state and needs constant care. The child cannot be fed through a bottle and cannot hold her head up. She was recently adopted by a loving family.
The parents pleaded guilty to their charges in March.
Assistant State Attorneys Rachel Algee and Erin Perry prosecuted the case.
