Parents warned not to choose fashion over fit

Pediatric ophthalmologist offers advice on buying eyeglasses for your kids

If you haven't noticed, glasses are all the rage- especially with kids. Specs don't seem to wreck your reputation at school so much anymore, so more and more kids are wearing them. Pediatric ophthalmologist Dr. Elias Traboulsi credits the newer styles and colors for helping to make eyeglasses more acceptable among children, but he warns parents not to choose fashion over fit.

"Glasses that do not fit well on the children's face, that slide on their nose and they look over them, or they start looking through the edge of the lens, of course, defeats the whole purpose of wearing them- especially if they are medically necessary," said Traboulsi, whos with Cleveland Clinic Children's.

Traboulsi recommends children pick out a frame that is comfortable for them. It should not be too tight on their head, but it also shouldn't be too loose. He also prefers kids pick out a frame that is more rounded than rectangular. He says a more-rounded frame will cover your child's eyes a little better.

"The rectangular kind of frame is very popular and very attractive, but if it slides a little bit the child is automatically looking around it, so I encourage the parents to get glasses that are more round, so they go a little bit higher, and even if they slide down a little bit the child is still looking through them," Traboulsi explained.

He encourages parents to shop around for their child's glasses. Traboulsi says the labs that make the lenses are all very good, so paying more doesn't necessarily buy you a better pair of glasses.
