Pedestrian trying to save cat hit by pickup truck

FHP says driver tried to stop on A1A in Nassau County

YULEE, Fla. – A 25-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed by a pickup truck on State Road A1A near Interstate 95 in Nassau County on Saturday night. Troopers say the man was attempting to get his pet cat out of the road when he was hit.

Troopers say David Marsh, 25, was driving west in a Chevy Silverado just after 10 p.m., approaching the intersection with I-95, when he braked, attempting to avoid hitting a pedestrian who was bent over in the lane to retrieve his pet cat.

The driver said he was unable to stop. The FHP said Zackary Landers was run over and died at the scene.

FHP said Landers was visiting from Oregon and was in an unlit area and wearing dark clothing.

Investigators say the cat was uninjured and taken to Nassau County Animal Control.

According to the FHP report, charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.
