FHP: Man killed while walking on US-441 Saturday night

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Florida Highway Patrol says a driver hit and killed a man while he was walking in Marion County Saturday night. Troopers say it happened 10:35 p.m. on US-441 about 100 feet south of Southeast 147 Place.

FHP says 31 year old Justin J. Sherk of Summerfield, Florida was driving alone in a 2009 Lincoln MKZ on US-441 at Southeast 147 Place. As he was traveling south 37 year old James Carl Whitehurst of Summerfield, Florida was crossing US-441 south of the intersection of Southeast 147 Place from east to west. As Whitehurst was crossing the outside southbound lane of US-441, troopers say the front of the vehicle Sherk was driving hit him. Sherk stopped the vehicle just south of the accident. Whitehurst was pronounced dead at the scene by Marion County Fire Rescue.

FHP says Sherk was wearing a seatbelt. Troopers are investigating to see if the crash was alcohol related.
