Peggy Edenfield Withdraws Guilty Plea

Sentenced To 60 Years In Prison Sept. 1

BRUNSWICK, Ga. – A Brunswick woman who pleaded guilty Sept. 1 for her role in the 2007 kidnapping, molestation and killing of a 6-year-old boy is seeking to withdraw the plea that sent her to prison for 60 years.

The woman, 62-year-old Peggy Edenfield, filed a handwritten motion Friday with the Clerk of Glynn County Superior Court.

Edenfield claims her court-appointed lawyer, Richard Allen, did not properly explain to her the consequences of changing her plea of not guilty on eight felony counts to guilty. Edenfield says in the motion she is mentally handicapped and was led to believe she would still have a trial.

"I was not instructed verbally the consequences of a plea change. I am mentally handicapped with an IQ of 62," Edenfield wrote.

Edenfield pleaded guilty but mentally retarded to charges related to the 2007 killing of Christopher Michael Barrios.

Edenfield pleaded guilty but mentally retarded to charges of false imprisonment, child molestation, cruelty to a child, concealing a death and tampering with evidence in the death of Christopher Barrios. Charges of murder, kidnapping and sexual assault were dropped.

Edenfield testified against her husband, David Edenfield, who was convicted and sentenced to death in October 2009. She was prepared to testify against her son, George Edenfield, before he was found incompetent to stand trial.

The three Edenfields were the boy's neighbors.
