Man struck by train, killed in St. Augustine

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – A pedestrian was struck by a train and killed Thursday afternoon in St. Augustine.

Police said the train was heading northbound on the Florida East Coast Railway about 1:15 p.m. when it hit a man. The victim died at the scene.

The scene was along North Ponce De Leon Boulevard, just north of State Road 16.

"This is a real straight shot right through here with the train," Officer Mark Samson said. "They laid down on the horn. The train, from kind of the point of impact to where it was stopped to the front of the train, is probably 150-200 feet at the most. It wasn't that far, considering."

Samson said the engineer believes he was going about 25 mph at the time.

Police are trying to identify the victim, who they said did not have an ID on him.
