Police: 2 brothers raped women, shot 1, set fire to motel
Two brothers tied up and sexually battered two women at a Motel 6 just off Baymeadows Road early Friday morning before shooting one of them in the head and setting fire before they left the room, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
According to the police report, one of the two women in their 20s talked to one of the suspects before Donald Dickerson and James Dickerson arrived at the motel room on Dix Ellis Trail just after midnight. Police said cellphone records show the women had invited the men to come over.
The victims said James Dickerson entered first, pulled a handgun and ordered the women to take off their clothes, forced one to tie up the other with bedsheets, then he tied up the second and proceeded to sexually assault both of them.
According to the report, Donald Dickerson then entered the room at some point and assisted his brother in the sexual assault of one of the women.
During the assault, a man came to the door and knocked. Police say he was ordered into the room at gunpoint and also tied up with bedsheets and a belt and threatened while the sexual assaults continued.
When one of the women resisted the assault, she was shot in the head.
Police say the brothers took about $400 in cash from the male victim and some car keys, changed clothes and set the room on fire before leaving.
The male victim was able to free himself and drag the two women out of the room before it was consumed in flames.
"There was considerable damage to the hotel, so he probably saved their lives," said JSO Lt. Rob Schoonover.
The woman shot in the head remains hospitalized, but she was able to write out the names of the men who assaulted her. The Dickerson brothers were positively identified by the other two victims in photo lineups.
Donald Dickerson, 32, and James Dickerson, 30, are charged with multiple counts of false imprisonment, attempted murder, sexual battery, armed robbery, carjacking and arson.
Police said both men have extensive criminal histories. James Dickerson has previous arrests for battery, resisting arrest, weapons violations, drug sales and possession. Donald Dickerson has previous arrests for aggravated battery, weapons, drug and traffic charges.
"The safety and security of our guests is our utmost priority, and our thoughts are with the victims," Motel 6 said in a statement. "We have and will continue to fully cooperate with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office in their investigation into this matter."
Channel 4 crime analyst Ken Jefferson said people need to be careful when they invite people over in the early morning hours.
"They're only thinking about one thing at that time," he said. "If you resist that, then there are those, such as these individuals, who will force themselves on you and force you to do things that you normally wouldn't do. You've got to use wisdom and good judgment."
