Investigation leads to manhunt for 3 men, lockdown of 6 schools Wednesday

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Police have identified the victim of a fatal shooting in St. Augustine that led to a manhunt Wednesday, which prompted the lockdown of six schools in the area.

Police said Carl Starke, 36, appears to be the victim of a random attack.

Starke was shot once in the chest around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday in the parking lot of the Vista Cove Condominiums off Masters Drive, where some of his family members live, police said.

On Wednesday, deputies searched woods off Masters Drive after two men ran from a car that St. Augustine police believe was connected to Starke's killing. A third man stayed with the car, which had crashed, but St. Johns County deputies and St. Augustine police, with the assistance of a helicopter and K-9 teams, searched for the second and third suspects, who were eventually captured.

The names of the men have not been released. Police said there was evidence in the car the men ditched, and one of the men was taken to the hospital because of injuries from the crash. The other two men are in jail on unknown charges.

The search prompted lockdowns in the early afternoon at St Augustine High School, Sebastian Middle, Murray Middle, Crookshank Elementary, St. Johns Tech and The Webster School. School officials said all the schools were closed for the day and began dismissal about 2 p.m.
