Police found 22-year-old JePaul Mainor, of Folkston, dead at the scene with a gun lying next to his head.

Investigators said 24-year-olds Shawvon Roberts and Paige Fellows, both of St Marys, were returning to the complex from a nightclub in Kingsland. Police said after they parked their car and started walking toward their apartment, Mainor and two other unidentified men came from the woods behind a building and started shooting at them.

Fellows jumped into the bushes to avoid being shot, while Roberts, who was still next to their car, retrieved his gun from inside the car and started shooting at Mainor and the other two men, police said.

Investigators said an altercation ensued after a dispute earlier in the evening between Roberts and Mainor at the nightclub in Kingsland, where both men suffered injuries.

Mainor's body was taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Medical Examiner's Office in Savannah for an autopsy.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
