Police office burglarized; vehicle, equipment stolen

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office wants to recover property taken by a burglar, after a police task force office on the Northside was broken into over Memorial Day weekend.

Former police officer and News4Jax Crime and Safety Analyst Gil Smith read the list of items taken from a field office on the Northside.

It includes police tactical vests, bulletproof vests, multiple sets of police blue lights for a vehicle, night vision technology, ammunition and a duffle bag with the word "police" on both sides.

"There is always a concern when police equipment has been stolen, for two reasons. One, you could have guns and ammunition that can be used in the commission of a crime. And two, you can have equipment that is used by police officers that can be used to fool the public and make them believe they are actually police officers. So those are two main concerns," he said.

An unmarked Chevrolet Lumina was also stolen. The car was later found burned on Alton Box Road.

Police said the door of the office was pried open. The front driver's window of a white Chevrolet pickup truck was smashed, and the key ignition was damaged.

While the thieves took ammunition, JSO said they did not take any weapons.

Anyone who has any information about whomever committed these crimes is asked to contact the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office at 904-630-0500 or email JSOCrimeTips@jaxsheriff.org. To remain anonymous and receive a possible reward up to $3,000, contact Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
