None of 18 students on bus were injured, police say

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Jacksonville school bus was shot Tuesday on the city's Westside by what appeared to be BB pellets, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

The bus was hit in the area of North Peter Rabbit Drive and Macgregor Drive.

There were 18 students on board from Crystal Springs and Chaffee Trail elementary schools. Police said two windows were broken, but no one was injured.

"If they would shoot a BB gun, chances are they would shoot a real gun. So it's something that needs to be stopped," said Harold Thomas, who has lived in the neighborhood for 34 years. "Parents in the neighborhood and in Jacksonville need to get a handle on these children because there are too many of our young people that are getting injured."

No arrests have been made, according to police.

Depending on the type of BB gun that was used, the shooter could face a felony charge, said Gil Smith, News4Jax crime and safety analyst.

"If it is a pump BB gun, it could build up a lot of pressure and it could travel 1,000 feet per second, and it could do a lot of damage and actually kill an animal, like a squirrel," Smith said. "They could be charged with a felony of firing a deadly missile through a vehicle."
