Several buses were traveling together from an NAS Jax summer camp, taking children to the Jacksonville Zoo.

One of the drivers who was not involved in the crash said police had a vehicle pulled over, and the buses were attempting to merge around the stopped vehicle when a car tried to go around one of the buses and entered the lane in front of the bus. According to witnesses, the driver of that bus swerved to avoid the car and hit another bus.

The buses belong to Birnie Bus Service, a company that serves Duval County schools, but a Duval County Schools spokesperson said the children inside were not Duval County students.

A witness said there were about 60 children on the buses and many were crying after the crash, but most were just shaken up.

The children who were not injured continued on to the zoo.

Some parents showed up at the crash scene trying to make sure their children were OK. JSO said if any parents have questions about the accident, they can call Birnie Bus Service at 904-683-3432.
