Three people were shot and one died at the Westchase Court Apartments on the Westside Monday night.
Anton White (pictured, below) , 24, died at the scene. Two other men who are in their early 20s were taken to a local hospital, one with life-threatening injures.
Police believe White and one of the other men who was shot lived in the apartment complex. They said there was no indication of any drugs at the site of the shooting and have not recovered a weapon.
Sherri White, Anton's mother, said her son died in her arms.
"Everybody needs to get on their knees and pray, and I'm going to tell it up front, you need to get on your knees and pray," said Sherri White, Anton's mother. "All this picking up a gun doesn't make any sense. All of this fighting and killing doesn't make any sense. My son, 24 years old, is gone. I will never see my baby again."
Shantel Walker said she is the sister of White and one of the other victims. Walker said White was shot in the chest.
"They told me some boy came and knocked on my mama door for my brothers, and next thing they know my other brother came running in the door saying my oldest brother got shot," Walker said. "When they look down, he was shot in his leg. So bout time my mama got back to the apartment, they found my brother and he had took his last breathe and died in my mama's arms."
"My other brother is OK, but he's shocked because he was there when his brother got killed," Walker said.
Walker said Zachary White is her other brother who was shot in the leg, and is recovering at UF Health Jacksonville.
Police were looking for a suspect early Tuesday morning, according to Sgt. Dan Janson of the JSO Homicide Unit. Investigators were not sure if one of the people shot was the gunman or if there was an outside suspect still on the loose.
"Investigation's still early," Janson said. "We're talking to one of the individuals at the hospital who's able to talk to us. We're also canvassing the apartments. As you can expect, there are a lot of apartments there. We're knocking on doors to see who saw what."
Police took some possible witnesses to its downtown headquarters for questioning.
"We don't know that of the three persons that all three are victims," Janson said. "There's a chance all three were involved in an altercation with each other, but I can't say that definitively at this point. It's still early. We think there might be some indication of that."
"My baby has never hurt anybody, nobody, but to take him away from me, I'm hurt," Sherri White said. "But I'm going to leave it in the hands of God and I'm going to let God deal with him. So you know you are. I hope you pray to God for what you did to my son at the age of 24."
