Suspect shot by JSO narcotics officers on Westside

Suspect hospitalized in critical condition; no officers injured

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Police are expected to hold a news conference at 10:30 a.m. Thursday to release more information on the shooting of a man by undercover narcotics officers Wednesday night.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, two undercover narcotics officers were driving along Wilson Street about 6 p.m. and came to a stop at Fouraker Road, where they saw three men in a very heated argument.

The shooting victim was across the street and began acting extremely aggressive toward the other two men.

The officers pulled over and began to approach the man when they said he pulled out a 9-millimeter handgun and started waiving it in the air.

"He takes the gun from his waistband and pulls it out points it at the two detectives," JSO director Tom Hackney said. "Now they're in fear for their own life, as well as fear for the lives of the subjects who were across the street. They deploy their issued firearms. Both detectives shoot and the subject is hit at least three times, once in the abdomen, once in the leg and once in the arm. Fire Rescue is called and he is transported to the hospital with serious injuries."

The man, whose name was not released Wednesday night, had surgery and was reported to be in critical condition.

He also said that this is the fourth police-involved shooting in Jacksonville this year and that this shooting may be in connection with another shooting that happened on the Westside earlier this month.

Police are expected to release the names of the people involved at the Thursday morning news conference, which will be carried live on News4Jax.com.
