JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A stepfather and stepson were shot Monday morning in the Biltmore area of Northwest Jacksonville during an altercation, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.
The double shooting was reported about 9:30 a.m. on Picketville Road near Old Kings Road, police said.
Police said Richard Thompson, 70, was shot in the stomach three times and his stepson, 33-year-old Michael Sines, was shot in the back. Both men were shot with the same gun, police said.
Thompson and Sines were taken to UF Health Jacksonville in critical but stable condition. They were conscious when they were transported, police said.
Police gave few details about the shooting but said Thompson and Sines had an argument that involved a revolver, and both men were shot. It's unclear who shot first or if either man will face charges.
Police said no one else was home at the time of the shooting, and it's unclear which man lives in the home.
Neighbors and others who are close to the family said they're not surprised by the violent dispute.
Lola Jeffries, who said she used to date Sines and is the mother of his teenage son, said there have always been problems between the two men.
“Him and his stepfather never got along,” Jeffries said. “They had a confrontation. His mom said that they walked out and heard gunshots."
Sines' mother was too upset to comment Monday.
“His mom never did stay at the house, because she was scared of him,” Jeffries said. “She stayed in Georgia with her husband. She came down to get her stuff.”
Neighbors said there have been problems at the house before, but police could not confirm any previous visits to the home.
