Police: Man with gun on Westside in custody

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Police said they took a man with a handgun into custody Thursday afternoon after officers say he ran on Melvin Circle East, and prompting a SWAT team callout.

No shots were fired, but a few homes were evacuated as police contained the man in a ditch. According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, he surrendered just after 2 p.m.

It was not known if the man would face criminal charges.

"At the very least, he will be Baker Acted," said Office Christian Hancock, referring to the Florida law that allows involuntary psychiatric evaluations.

Melvin Road between Melvin Circle East and Melvin Circle West were closed, along with Firestone Road at Melvin Road, early Thursday afternoon until the man was in custody.
