Police: Vehicle burglary suspect caught in act

PALATKA, Fla. – A Satsuma man was arrested and charged with vehicle burglary Monday night in Palatka after witnesses quickly reported the theft to police, according to the Palatka Police Department.

About 8:50 p.m. Monday, a neighbor contacted the Palatka Police Department to report a vehicle burglary in the 2200 block of Gillis Street. The neighbor said the suspected burglar had been standing in his driveway and gave police a description of the man.

Officers responded to the area and found a man matching the description in the 2000 block of Oak Street. According to police, the man, later identified as Cody Allyn Shope of Satsuma, was in possession of several items that matched the description of items taken from the vehicle on Gillis Street.

Witnesses identified Shope as the man who had been in the driveway where the victim's vehicle was parked.

Shope was arrested and charged with vehicle burglary and theft. He also had an active warrant for child support, police said.

Palatka police remind residents to be on the lookout for suspicious people in their neighborhoods. Palatka has had several residential burglaries and thefts recently. Police ask residents to report all suspicious people and activities to the police through Central Dispatch at 386-329-0801.
