Police warn of fake unemployment claims

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The St. Augustine Police Department said it has taken several reports over the last few months that involve fake unemployment claims.

Police said the claim is made to a local business in the name of a person employed there or who has recently left employment.

Most of the scams are unsophisticated and do not produce any money exchange, police said.

"Call and report it, but one of the best things to do is hang up on these people," said St. Augustine Police spokesman Mark Samson said.

The Florida Department of Economic Opportunities said most business owners recognize this as a scam.

Police said they will document these as suspicious activity, all while looking for similar activity and reports.
