Congressional Democrats oppose Florida campus-carry bill

Congressional Democrats want Florida's Republican-dominated Legislature to know they oppose a proposal that would allow gun owners with concealed-weapons licenses to carry firearms while on state university and college campuses.

In a letter to Florida House Speaker Steve Crisafulli and Senate President Andy Gardiner, the state's 10 Democratic members of the U.S. House voiced their opposition to the proposal (SB 68 and HB 4001), which is backed by gun-rights groups.

"We agree that campus violence is a serious problem. Sadly, there have been at least 23 shootings on college campuses just in 2015," the letter said. "Increasing the number of guns on college campuses is simply not the answer."

The proposal is ready to go to the state House floor, but awaits a hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
