Former Gainesville senator dies at 87

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Businessman Bob Saunders, who represented the Gainesville area in the state Senate in the late 1960s and early 1970s, has died, according to a story in The Gainesville Sun.

Saunders, who died Sunday at his home, was 87.

Saunders was elected to the Senate in 1968 and again in 1972, according to historical Senate handbooks.

Among Saunders' business interests were a gasoline distributorship that he took over at age 23 after his father died, according to the Sun.

A funeral will be held at a later date.
