Broward County Sheriff's Office: Pottery may contain human skull pieces

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Transportation Security Administration agents found pottery filled with dirt and possible human skull fragments inside a carry-on bag at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

Two women heading to Baltimore were carrying the bag on their AirTrain fight when the discovery was made in Terminal 1 at the Concourse C checkpoint about 3 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

BSO on the scene told WPLG-TV reporter Christina Vazquez the passengers were Santeria priestess from Baltimore, who travelled to Cuba for religious training. The women purchased the pots at a religious shop, saying they are for "protection."

No charges will be filed since BSO said they were not aware bone fragments were in the pots. The pots were sealed, and the fragments were discovered when one of them broke.

BSO said they will be in touch with Cuban officials. The women boarded their flight to Baltimore Wednesday evening. They were allowed to take the rest of their items in the carry-on luggage.

The bones are currently at the medical examiner's office for further evaluation and confirmation. DHS is now handling the investigation.
