Possible police impersonator in St. Johns County

Suspect was said to be in a red, early 2000's model Ford Taurus

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – St. Johns County deputies are investigating after a woman said she was stopped over the weekend by a police impersonator.

Deputies said it happened just after midnight early Saturday morning. The woman said she was stopped by what she believed was a police officer traveling east on State Road 207 near County Road 305.

The woman said the car pulled up behind her and began flashing lights that were blue, red and possibly green. She said the lights appeared to be in the windshield. St. Johns County deputies point out they do not use green lights on their police cruisers.

According to deputies, a man wearing dark clothing began approaching the woman's car on foot. As he walked toward her vehicle, the woman determined he was not an officer based on his clothing, the age of his vehicle and lack of a law enforcement badge.

She then drove away from the traffic stop. The woman said she watched as the man got into his car, made a U-turn and drove west on State Road 207.

The woman described the man's car as a dark red, early 2000's model year Ford Taurus with no window tint.

"It was a, what she would perceive to be a much older vehicle than what would be used in police service today," Commander Chuck Mulligan said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office at 904-824-8304 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-277-TIPS.
