JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

A Putnam County sheriff's deputy who shot multiple times at a fleeing vehicle has been fired.

The Sheriff's Office says Deputy Brandon Culbreth was never in harm's way Sept. 30 when he fired a pickup truck.

Maj. Johnny Greenwood told The Florida Times-Union that Culbreth violated policies governing vehicle pursuits and use-of-force.

According to an investigation, Culbreth spotted the truck while responding to a call about a possible burglary at a home on Royal Way in Interlachen.

They said the burglar was driving away from the home and heading toward State Road 20 when Culbreth tried to pull it over, but its driver lost control and hit a fence before turning toward the deputy.

Investigators found that Culbreth continued his pursuit without sufficient information.

Officials say Culbreth opened fire, hitting the vehicle eight times. The driver fled on foot and was never located.
