JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Greenland Road reopened about 9 p.m. Tuesday after being closed several days for repairs to the railroad crossing near Philips Highway.
The closure, which started at 7 a.m. Sunday, caused heavy delays for morning commuters Monday and Tuesday. People were urged to leave for work or school early.
There was also congestion Monday afternoon when school let out. Though many drivers knew to exit Greenland Road onto Old St. Augustine Road, traffic was still backed up.
Due to the closure, cars coming out of Mandarin High and Greenland Elementary schools all had to go the same way, which is what caused the delays and jams.
The Florida Department of Transportation replaced the railroad crossing signs on Greenland Road, just west of Philips Highway.
